Massive 7.1 magnitude shake ’causes leak’ at Japan nuclear power plant. At the Japan Meteorological Agency news conference, the magnitude of the strong quake that jolted northeast Japan on Saturday at 11:08 p.m. was updated from magnitude 7.1 to 7.3.

About 830,000 households were hit by blackouts, according to Tokyo Electric Power Co., also known as Tepco. The epicenter of the quake is about 220 kilometers (135 miles) north of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

There was no threat of a tsunami, officials said. 2011 is a year when Japan experienced the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami hitting several places including Fukushima. In 2021 when another powerful earthquake hits Fukushima. It is almost 10 years since a huge earthquake and tsunami devastated Fukushima in this north eastern part of Japan.
