Russia has already confirmed to the World Health Organization (WHO) the first case of avian strain or bird flu virus called H5N8 that has infected humans from birds.
According to Russia Health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor head Anna Popova, Russia has already extended the said case to the WHO a few days ago, after confirming the results of their study.
In televised remarks, the head of Russia’s health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova, “Information about the world’s first case of transmission of the avian flu (H5N8) to humans has already been sent to the World Health Organization.”
“The discovery of these mutations when the virus has not still acquired an ability to transmit from human to human gives us all, the entire world, time to prepare for possible mutations and react in an adequate and timely fashion,” Popova added.
The WHO confirmed on Saturday that it had been notified by Russia about the development.
“We are in discussion with national authorities to gather more information and assess the public health impact of this event,” a spokesperson said.
“If confirmed, this would be the first time H5N8 infects people.”
In December there was an outbreak of AH5N8 strain on a poultry plan in the southern part of Russia where seven were infected with the virus but are now in good condition.
